Sociology

Sociology Faculty Vision and Intent

We provide our students the opportunity to critically examine the social world, understand and question social dynamics, and acknowledge some of our society’s most pressing problems.  Our students are informed and objective thinkers, and thrive through a rigorous curriculum which provides opportunities to  analyse sociological explanations, ask pertinent questions and evaluate theoretical standpoints.  We hope our students go on to be the leaders of tomorrow, working for a more empathetic, socially-aware, inclusive and just future.

In order to achieve this, we want to inspire students to:

  • Constantly view the social world through a critical lense, recognising inequality and advocate for social justice
  • Evaluate the use of different types of research and question the validity of its findings
  • Continually analyse how issues of identity impact the life chances of different social groups
  • Make links between sociology and current social policy, and take an interest in politics
  • Be able to write evaluatively, analysing the strengths and weaknesses of theoretical arguments
  • Understand research processes take both a qualitative and quantitative nature
  • Acknowledge the sociological contributions of a range of theoretical standpoints, acknowledging bias and how values impact explanations
  • Be confident with Marxism, Feminism, Functionalism. Social Interactionism and Postmodernism
